Timecode

Timecode is the running hours:minutes:seconds:frames reference stamped on video and audio. It lets everyone on a project point to the exact same moment, which is essential for subtitling, dubbing and syncing a voice over to picture.

Most problems blamed on subtitling are really timecode problems: a file cut against one frame rate and played back at another drifts further out of sync the longer the video runs. Confirm the frame rate of the master before anything is timed.
