Glossary
Mother tongue
A person’s mother tongue is their first or native language — the one learned from birth and usually spoken most naturally. A second language is any language learned in addition to it.
It matters commercially because an audience hears the difference. A read or a translation produced by someone working into their mother tongue carries the idiom, rhythm and register a very fluent second-language speaker usually misses.
